Chateau Talbot, Saint-Julien, 2001
Chateau Talbot is one of Saint-Julien's largest estates, named for the English commander John Talbot who fell at the Battle of Castillon in 1453—the engagement that ended English rule in Bordeaux. The estate has belonged to the Cordier family since 1917, and with over 100 hectares under vine, it produces one of the appellation's most consistent and fairly-priced classified growths. The 2001 vintage was initially overshadowed by the celebrated 2000, but has proven itself a classic Saint-Julien with textbook structure and elegance. Now at 24 years of age, this wine has entered its optimal drinking window, where the Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated blend shows integrated tannins, developed secondary aromas of cedar, tobacco, and earth, with the fruit still present but softened into something savory and complex. A compelling opportunity to experience mature Left Bank Bordeaux.
