Chateau Beau-Sejour Becot, Saint-Emilion (lightly scuffed labels), 1998
From one of the great Right Bank vintages, fully mature and showing what classified Saint-Émilion looks like when it has finished evolving. Beau-Séjour Bécot sits on the Saint-Martin de Mazerat limestone plateau — Premier Grand Cru Classé status restored in 1996, under the Bécot family stewardship now led by Juliette and Julien. The 1998 was a celebrated vintage on the Right Bank, and at 27 years old this Merlot-led blend (aged in a high percentage of new oak as was the house style of the era) has shed its primary fruit and oak in favor of forest floor, dried plum, sweet tobacco, and the truffle complexity that mature Saint-Émilion delivers. A library bottle drinking at peak — decant gently and serve with the meal.
