Chateau Lafite-Rothschild, Pauillac, 2015
Lafite-Rothschild is one of the five First Growths of the 1855 classification and, for many, the most aristocratic of them all, the standard-bearer for finesse, perfume and longevity in Pauillac. Its gravelly vineyards in northern Pauillac, neighboring Mouton, produce a Cabernet Sauvignon-led wine of extraordinary elegance rather than brute power. The 2015 comes from an excellent, sought-after vintage that produced charming, beautifully balanced left-bank wines. This is a young Lafite, tightly coiled and ageworthy; it rewards serious cellaring or, at minimum, a long decant. A collector's First Growth and one of the benchmark wines of Bordeaux.
