Ferrando, Carema Etichetta Bianca, 2011
Ferrando is the legendary grower of Carema, the tiny alpine Nebbiolo appellation set on steep terraces where Piedmont rises toward the Aosta Valley. The high elevation gives these wines a perfumed, high-toned delicacy, lighter than Barolo but long-lived. The Etichetta Bianca (white label) is the annual bottling, raised in large and small barrels. The 2011 was a warm, generous year up in the hills, so this drinks a bit rounder and riper than the cooler vintages, and it's showing beautifully right now.
