Jean-Jacques Girard, Corton-En Charlemagne Rouge, 2012
A grand-cru red from the Corton hill, Girard's Corton 'En Charlemagne,' grown on the lower slopes where Pinot Noir replaces the famous white-wine Chardonnay above. This is from a seventh-generation Savigny-les-Beaune family that farms across many appellations of the Cote de Beaune, and grand cru Corton is the top of their red lineup. 2012 was a small, concentrated vintage, frost- and hail-reduced, that gave dense, serious wines. The fruit is matured in oak for over a year, building structure for the cellar. Now mature enough to enjoy, this is grand-cru Burgundy without grand-cru noise. Decant it.
