Luis Seabra, Mono C (Castelao), 2022
Luis Seabra has become a true superstar of Portuguese wine, and this bottle is one of his best experiments. Castelão is a grape of the sunny south, around Setúbal and Lisboa—so finding it here, on a single plot of yellow schist at 450 meters up in the cool Douro, is a genuine oddity, and exactly the kind of terroir puzzle Seabra loves. His "Mono" series bottles one grape at a time to let the site speak, and this one was whole-cluster fermented on wild yeasts and raised in old barrels for a year and a half. The result is unexpectedly gentle for the Douro: bright, high-toned red and blue fruit over that flinty schist minerality, tannins soft as suede. Distinctive, delicious, and unlike anything else on the shelf.
