Walter Scott, Chardonnay Witness Tree, 2023
Witness Tree is one of the higher, cooler perches in the Eola-Amity Hills, named for an old white oak that surveyors once used as a landmark, set on the volcanic Jory and Nekia soils that give the Eola-Amity its cut. It sits right in the path of the Van Duzer wind corridor, where cold Pacific air funnels in each afternoon to slow ripening and lock in acidity. That's the raw material Walter Scott turns into one of Oregon's most Burgundian Chardonnays. Ken Pahlow and Erica Landon launched the label out of Patricia Green Cellars in 2008 and have quietly become one of the most respected addresses in the Willamette Valley. Native-yeast fermented, put through full malolactic, and raised in large barrel with very little bâtonnage, the 2023 keeps its lemon-and-crushed-rock nerve intact. This is Chardonnay for people who love Puligny and Chablis but want Oregon clarity.
