Bernard Levet, Cote-Rotie, 2017
Bernard Levet's house cuvee is the friendliest door into this old-school Ampuis domaine, blended from parcels across both the Cote Blonde (Les Craies, Mollard) and Cote Brune (Moulin and younger Fontgent vines). It rests two years in 600-liter barrels, less than ten percent new, so the wine stays perfumed and Syrah-forward rather than oaky. The family has worked these 3.5 hectares close to organically since 1936. The 2017 came from a warm, dry year, so expect riper, rounder fruit and a slightly plusher feel than the cooler vintages, which makes it especially easygoing in its youth. Open it now with a short decant.
