Bernard Levet, Cote-Rotie La Chavaroche, 2018
La Chavaroche is Bernard Levet's muscular cru, off a 1.2-hectare parcel on the granite-and-schist slopes of the Cote Brune, the more powerful, age-worthy half of Cote-Rotie. The family has worked the same way since 1936: whole clusters, very little new oak, and a long 30-to-36-month rest in old barrels so the wine speaks of place rather than cellar tricks. The 2018 came from a warm, ripe vintage, giving fuller, fleshier fruit while Levet's hands-off approach keeps the savory, peppery character intact. There's plenty of structure here for cellaring, but the generosity of the year means it drinks well with a good decant. Give it air.
