Bernard Levet, Cote-Rotie La Chavaroche, 2016
La Chavaroche is the bigger of Bernard Levet's two cru bottlings, drawn from a 1.2-hectare slice of the Cote Brune where granite and schist push the Syrah toward dark fruit, iron and a wild streak. The Levet family has farmed here since 1936 and still works in whole clusters, no new oak, with the wine aging 30 to 36 months in old barrels. The 2016 is the connoisseur's vintage in the Northern Rhone: balanced, classically proportioned, with fresh acidity holding everything in line rather than the sheer power of the surrounding years. That makes it both approachable a touch earlier and capable of a long life. Decant when young.
