Bois de Boursan, Chateauneuf-du-Pape Rouge, 2001

Bois de Boursan is a small Chateauneuf-du-Pape domaine run on resolutely traditional lines by Jean-Paul Versino, whose family came over from Piedmont and now farms more than two dozen old-vine parcels across the appellation. The reds here are made the old way: whole-cluster fruit, long maceration, aging in big neutral wood, and all thirteen permitted grape varieties in play, which gives the wine its classic warmth and aromatic lift. The 2001 was an excellent Southern Rhone vintage, and this back-vintage bottle now drinks with mellowed, savory maturity. Decant and serve with a hearty meal.
