Bruno Giacosa, Barolo Le Rocche del Falletto Riserva Red label, 2011
This is as close to the top of Barolo as it gets. Bruno Giacosa reserved his famous red label for only a handful of bottlings he deemed truly exceptional, and Le Rocche del Falletto Riserva is the crown jewel, a vineyard selection from the sweet spot of the Falletto cru in Serralunga d'Alba. The vines sit on a steep, southwest-facing amphitheater of calcareous clay that Giacosa considered the finest ground in the region for elegant, long-lived Barolo. It spends 32 months in large French oak botti, then years more in bottle before release. The 2011 is a warm, generous vintage, more approachable in its youth than the austere classics, but make no mistake, this is a wine to cellar for the long haul. Decant well ahead.
