Cappellano, Barolo Pie Rupestris, 2011
From one of Barolo's most uncompromising cult houses: Pie Rupestris is 100% Serralunga in character - severe, authoritative, austere yet generous - made from Nebbiolo on Rupestris rootstock in the Otin Fiorin parcel of the Gabutti cru, Serralunga d'Alba. Cappellano farms tiny quantities the old way and refuses scores and marketing on principle. The 2011 was a warmer, riper season that gave a more openly fruited, slightly earlier-drinking Barolo than the cooler classic years. It still carries Serralunga's backbone, but offers an earlier window into this hard-to-find bottling.
