From one of Barolo's most cult, anti-commercial houses: Cappellano's Pie Rupestris comes from Nebbiolo on Rupestris rootstock in the Otin Fiorin parcel of the Gabutti cru, Serralunga d'Alba, 100% Serralunga in its severe, authoritative, austere-yet-generous character. Cappellano refuses scores and marketing and farms in tiny quantities. The 2015 was a warm, generous, ripe vintage that gave fuller-bodied, more openly fruited Barolo with plenty of plushness over the Serralunga structure. Approachable earlier than the classic cooler years, but with the stuffing to age.
