Carlo Giacosa, Barbaresco Montefico, 2016
Legendary 2016 Barbaresco from a tiny, often-overlooked family estate. Carlo Giacosa — no relation to the famous Bruno — has been farming five hectares in the Barbaresco commune since the 1950s. Today Maria Grazia (Donato's granddaughter) runs things alongside her son Luca, working a clutch of parcels in the most coveted crus of the village. The family began farming their Montefico parcel in 1992, and 2016 — universally considered one of the great Barbaresco vintages of the modern era — gave them a wine of extraordinary purity. Montefico's iron-rich blue marl produces a more structured, brooding Barbaresco than the village's sweeter sites; nine years on, it's beginning to show its complexity, but there's a long road ahead.
