Castello Dei Rampolla, Vigna D'Alceo, 2010
Vigna d'Alceo is the flagship of Castello dei Rampolla, a Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot blend (roughly 85/15) from Panzano in Chianti, named for the founder Alceo di Napoli. What sets it apart from most Super Tuscans is the farming: Rampolla converted to biodynamics in 1994, and these terraced plots, first planted to Cabernet in 1990, have essentially never known conventional treatments. Since 2007 the wine sees only 10 to 12 months in barrel with very little new oak, a deliberate move to keep freshness and let the site speak. The 2010 vintage has the structure and depth to age for many years; open it well ahead or cellar it.
