Chateau Cru Godard, Francs Cotes de Bordeaux, 2022

Four generations of Carine Godard's family have tended this 23-hectare estate since 1895. Carine inherited in 1998; she and husband Franck Richard began estate bottling in 2002, achieved organic certification with 2010, and are converting to biodynamic. Franck does everything by feel without consulting an oenologist. Francs Cotes de Bordeaux is a small, diverse appellation northeast of Bordeaux sharing fossil-rich limestone proximity to Saint-Emilion, with some of the highest altitudes among the Cotes. Clay-limestone over tuffeau with 45-year average vine age. Blend of 60% Merlot, 29% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Cabernet Franc, aged 50% in tank and 50% in older barrels. No added yeast, very low sulfur. Pure, fresh, and terroir-expressive with surprising minerality.
