Domaine Charvin, Chateauneuf du Pape, 2016
In a Chateauneuf world full of high-octane blockbusters, Domaine Charvin is the quiet traditionalist, and this is a rare chance to catch one of its best vintages with a decade of age already behind it. Laurent Charvin makes just one red here, from sandy, stony soils in the cool northwest corner of the appellation near Orange, and he makes it the old way: whole clusters, concrete vats, not a splinter of new oak. The result leans Grenache and leans elegant, all kirsch, garrigue, and pepper wrapped in a silky, medium-full frame. 2016 was a benchmark southern Rhone vintage, and Charvin nailed it. Ten years on, it's drinking beautifully and has years left to give.
