Domaine de la Vieille Julienne, Chateauneuf du Pape Reserve, 2009
This is old-vine Grenache at its most patient. Jean-Paul Daumen farms biodynamically in Chateauneuf-du-Pape, and his Reserve is drawn from a tiny plot of centenarian vines on sandy soils that lend finesse to all that southern Rhone power. Made only in vintages that earn it and produced in vanishingly small quantities, the 2009 was the last release before Daumen reorganized his range by terroir, closing a chapter at the domaine. At seventeen years old, it has arrived: the fruit has softened toward truffle and spice, the tannins have melted, and the wine drinks with silk and sweetness. Decant gently to leave the sediment behind, and enjoy a mature Chateauneuf in its prime.
