Domaine de Marcoux, Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes, 2015
The rich, opulent side of Chateauneuf, done with finesse. Domaine de Marcoux, run by the Armenier sisters, was an early adopter of biodynamic practices in the southern Rhone (certified organic since 1991; biodynamic in practice, not Demeter-certified) and remains one of the appellation's benchmark estates, farming organically since 1991. Their Vieilles Vignes comes from old-vine Grenache, and 2015 was a warm, generous vintage that gave this wine deep, sappy, palate-staining fruit. What keeps it from tipping over is the estate's touch: juicy acidity and velvety tannins that hold all that power in balance. Approachable now, but built to reward a decade or more in the cellar.
