Giuseppe Quintarelli, Alzero Cabernet, 1993
One of Italy's most singular wines, in a back-vintage that is now over thirty years old. The late Giuseppe Quintarelli, a saint of Valpolicella traditionalism, proved that Bordeaux varieties could make something incredible and quintessentially Veneto: Alzero is a Cabernet-based red (Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and a little Merlot) made in the Amarone style, with the grapes dried for months before pressing, then aged for years in French and Slavonian oak. The result is a profound, sweet-fruited yet dry red of extraordinary depth. The 1993 is fully mature; and the excellent provenance and storage for this wine matter at this age. A collector's wine for a special occasion, served from a decanter.
