Giuseppe Quintarelli, Alzero Cabernet, 1995
Quintarelli's Alzero, one of the most unique and sought-after wines in all of Italy, here in a mature 1995. The late Giuseppe Quintarelli, a radical traditionalist of Valpolicella, made this Cabernet-based red (Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and a touch of Merlot) in the Amarone style: grapes dried for months, then long aging in French and Slavonian oak. It is dry, but with a depth and dried-fruit intensity that recalls great Amarone, unmistakably Veneto despite the Bordeaux grapes. At three decades old this is a fully mature library bottle where provenance counts. Decant and savor on a special night.
