Grifalco, Aglianico del Vulture 'Daginestra', 2021
The two Grifalco cru Aglianicos make a fascinating pair — same family, same cellar treatment, two very different volcanic soils. Where Damaschito comes from iron-stained red ground in San Martino, Daginestra hails from the commune of Ginestra: sandy soil shot through with volcanic ash, plus pockets of limestone and clay that give the earth a gray cast. The vines are 80 years old, the parcel just 1.4 hectares. Grifalco — the Piccin family project founded by Fabrizio and now led by sons Lorenzo and Andrea — vinifies parcel by parcel for a full year before deciding which barrels make which wine. The 2021 Daginestra shows the more lifted, perfumed face of Vulture Aglianico: dark cherry, herbs and volcanic ash, with the firm tannic frame and savory length that mark this great southern grape.
