Grifalco, Aglianico del Vulture 'Damaschito', 2021
Aglianico del Vulture is southern Italy's most serious red — grown on the volcanic slopes of an extinct Basilicata stratovolcano — and Grifalco is among its most articulate voices. Founded by Fabrizio Piccin in the early 2000s and now run by sons Lorenzo and Andrea, the family bottles cru-by-cru to highlight the various volcanic soils on Mount Vulture. Damaschito comes from a single, very old vineyard in Contrada San Martino between Maschito and Forenza — iron- and manganese-rich sandy soil that stains the ground a deep red, with layers of volcanic ash beneath. Aged eighteen months in Slavonian oak and a year in bottle before release, the 2021 is the velvet-glove side of Vulture Aglianico — perfumed and energetic, but underpinned by serious structure and a stern mineral core. Built for the decade ahead.
