Hyde Vineyard, Cabernet Sauvignon Hyde de Villaine, 2005
A 21-year-old Napa Cab from one of the region's most celebrated joint ventures. Hyde de Villaine (HdV) is the partnership between Larry Hyde — owner of the legendary Hyde Vineyard in Carneros — and his cousin Pamela de Villaine, wife of Aubert de Villaine of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. Founded in 2000, the project brings Burgundian sensibility to Napa fruit, working exclusively from Hyde Vineyard sources. Belle Cousine — named in Pamela's honor — is HdV's flagship red, a Bordeaux-style blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot from the eastern edge of Carneros. The 2005 vintage was cool and slow-paced, giving the wine pronounced acidity and gradual flavor development. More than two decades on, this is fully mature: silky, savory, and elegant in a way few Napa Cabs ever achieve.
