Peay Vineyards, Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir, 2014
From one of the cult names of the far Sonoma Coast — the partnership of brothers Andy and Nick Peay with winemaker Vanessa Wong (Nick's wife). Wong came to Peay after a stint at Peter Michael and earlier work at Château Lafite-Rothschild and Domaine Jean Gros in Vosne-Romanée — a Burgundian pedigree that shows in everything she makes. The Peay estate sits four miles from the Pacific in extreme far west Sonoma, on a cold, marginal site that produces some of California's most ethereal Pinot Noirs. The Sonoma Coast bottling is the appellation-level blend — drawn from estate barrels that, through blind blending, don't make their way into the single-vineyard cuvées (Scallop Shelf, Pomarium, Ama). It's 100% estate fruit, free-run only, and a beautiful introduction to the Peay style. Now 12 years on, the 2014 is showing developing complexity.
