Pichat, Cote-Rotie "Champons", 2013

Côte-Rôtie—the 'roasted slope'—produces Syrah from the Northern Rhône's steepest, most dramatic terroirs, where schist rock reflects the sun to create wines of remarkable intensity and minerality. Domaine Pichat was born when Stéphane Pichat, son of a legendary winemaker, struck out to make his own wines, crafting Syrah that captures both the power and finesse of this hallowed appellation. The Champons cuvée comes from a mid-slope parcel farmed with meticulous care on granite-rich soils that impart tension and minerality. This 2013, now at 11 years of age, is fully mature—showing the fragrance and complexity that distinguish Côte-Rôtie at its finest. Notes of smoke and perfume mingle with hints of licorice, lavender, and violet, while the palate offers ripe, integrated tannins that are attractive now but promise further development through 2036. The wine's 30-40% new oak aging has softened considerably, revealing the underlying terroir. A magnificent expression of terroir-driven Northern Rhône Syrah.
