Quinta do Noval, Vintage Port, 2000
Vintage Port only gets declared in years the houses believe are worth it, and 2000 was one of them — a millennium declaration that has aged into exactly what it promised. Quinta do Noval sits above Pinhao on some of the Douro's most dramatically terraced ground, and its Vintage bottling is built to be forgotten about for decades. This one has had twenty-six years to soften and has arrived somewhere very good: dark, sweet and thick with dried fig, cassis, cocoa and violets, the fortifying spirit now fully absorbed into the fruit. The tannins have turned to velvet, but there is still enough grip and lift to keep it from going cloying. Decant it off its sediment, pour small glasses, and let it hold the room for the rest of the night. It drinks beautifully now and will keep for many years more.
