Roger Sabon, Chateauneuf du Pape Le Secret de Sabon, 2001
A micro-production prestige cuvee drawn from Roger Sabon's oldest Grenache vines, some past a century old, in one of modern Chateauneuf's greatest vintages. "Le Secret" is exactly that: historically just a single small cask or a fraction of a vat each year, born from ancient vines near Courthezon yielding almost nothing, which is why so little exists. 2001 was a landmark year in the Southern Rhone, low yields and a hot, dry summer giving concentrated wines with firm ripe tannin and real structure to age. At around 25 years this bottle is fully in its prime, trading primary power for the layered, tertiary complexity that old-vine Grenache develops with patience. Decant it and give it a serious dinner to match.
