Salicutti, Brunello di Montalcino Piaggione, 2010
From Montalcino's first certified organic estate, a single-vineyard Brunello of unusual purity. Podere Salicutti was founded by Francesco Leanza, a Sangiovese true believer who became close friends with the likes of Stella di Campalto, and the estate is now run by the Eichbauer family pushing it further into biodynamics. Piaggione is a steep, 1.2-hectare cru on skeleton-rich limestone at 420 to 450 meters, and the wine is bottled without stabilization, fining or filtration; the result is a pure, almost Burgundian take on Sangiovese, all elegance over muscle. The 2010 came from a celebrated, structured Brunello vintage built for the cellar, and it's drinking beautifully now. A connoisseur's Montalcino.
