Bernard Faurie, Hermitage Greffieux-Bessards, 2012
Bernard Faurie is the great under-the-radar traditionalist of Hermitage, and this cuvée comes from two of the hill's prized parcels, Les Greffieux at the base and Les Bessards, the granite stronghold on the western edge that Faurie considers essential to any real Hermitage. He works the old way: whole clusters, foot-treading, native yeasts, and long aging in demi-muids with minimal new oak. The 2012 came from a tricky growing season saved by a fine September, yielding a wine that's more about finesse and aromatics than sheer power. A classically built, savory Hermitage from a true purist, with years of life ahead.
