Castello Dei Rampolla, Vigna d'Alceo, 2013
The 2013 d'Alceo comes from a cooler, more classically proportioned vintage than the powerful 2010, which suits Rampolla's modern, freshness-driven style. It's still the estate's flagship: a Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot blend (around 85/15) from biodynamically farmed terraces in Panzano in Chianti, named for founder Alceo di Napoli. The vines were planted on virgin terraces from 1990, and since 2007 the wine has seen just 10 to 12 months in barrel with minimal new oak to preserve aromatics. Expect a more elegant, lifted expression than the bigger years, with the structure to age gracefully. Worth a long decant or more time in the cellar.
