Chateau la Vieille Cure, Fronsac, 2010
One of the great values of the Right Bank: Chateau la Vieille Cure, in the Fronsac appellation just west of Pomerol, has been making serious, polished wine since American owners revived the estate in 1986 and brought in Michel Rolland to consult. The 37-hectare vineyard is planted mostly to Merlot, with Cabernet Franc and a little Cabernet Sauvignon, on limestone, chalk and clay - and some Merlot vines push nearly a century old. The 2010 was a great Bordeaux vintage of power and structure, so this should be drinking beautifully now while still holding plenty in reserve. Polished, generous, and far more affordable than its Pomerol neighbors.
