Dumien-Serrette, Cornas Saveaux, 2015
Flatiron loves Dumien-Serrette as a contender for the throne of old-school, traditional Cornas, the great Syrah appellation of the northern Rhone. This is a family that has worked these granite hillsides since the 1500s, selling grapes to negociants for centuries before bottling their own from the early 1980s, and they still price their wine modestly while the rest of the AOC inflates. Saveaux is a single granite-rich lieu-dit, and the 2015 comes from a powerful, ripe, structured vintage. As our favorite Rhone critic put it, this can be a Burgundian, high-appeal Cornas, friendly up front with iron and tea-leaf terroir notes unfolding on the finish. Decant it and give it time; this still has years ahead.
