Gilles Barges, Cote-Rotie Le Combard, 2015
Gilles Barge is the New York City of the Northern Rhone, as the family likes to put it, an emerging name making some of the most talked-about and genuinely affordable Cote-Roties around, all in a proudly traditional style. Le Combard is a single lieu-dit on the Cote Blonde side of the appellation, a nearly inaccessible slope of gravel over gneiss and mica-schist. It's Syrah (sometimes with a whisper of Viognier), whole-cluster fermented and aged in older large barrels, so there's no new-oak makeup hiding the fruit. The 2015 was a great vintage here and the wine has the structure to reward patience. Decant it if you're opening one young.
