Jean-Luc Jamet, Cote-Rotie, 2014
Few names carry the weight in Cote-Rotie that Jamet does, and this is Jean-Luc's own. When the legendary Jamet brothers split their family domaine in 2013, Jean-Luc carried on solo, drawing Syrah from prized lieux-dits across the appellation, much of it on the schist and granite of the Cote Brune, with parcels in spots like Lancement, Chavaroche and Landonne. He uses a measured hand with whole clusters (around a third) to lift the wine's floral side rather than bury it. The 2014 is a classic, cooler northern Rhone vintage, the kind that rewards patience with perfume and finesse over sheer power. Now well into its second decade, it's drinking beautifully, and there's no rush.
