Lopez de Heredia, Rioja Reserva 'Tondonia', 2013
When LĂłpez de Heredia releases a Tondonia Reserva, the wine world pays attention — and the 2013 has just arrived after nearly 12 years of aging in the cellars of Haro. Founded in 1877 and now led by MarĂa JosĂ© LĂłpez de Heredia, this estate is the most committed traditionalist in Rioja: six years in old American oak with twice-yearly racking, fining with fresh egg white, then years of unfiltered bottle rest before release. The 2013 blend is roughly 70% Tempranillo with Garnacho, Graciano, and Mazuelo, from a cooler, rainy vintage that gave wines of finesse rather than power. Now just out and drinking beautifully on its own terms, it should hold and evolve for decades. A library-style Rioja from arguably the appellation's greatest house.
