Montevertine, Rosso di Toscana, 2013
From the estate that rewrote the rules of Tuscan wine, this is Montevertine's flagship Rosso (the Montevertine bottling), a Sangiovese-based blend with small amounts of Canaiolo and Colorino, grown in the high-elevation village of Radda in Chianti. Like its more famous sibling Le Pergole Torte, it carries the humble IGT designation only because the estate famously walked away from the Chianti Classico appellation in 1981. It delivers Radda's signature: bright red-berry fruit and aromatic elegance with a real sense of place. The 2013 was a cool, classic vintage, and after more than a decade it's drinking in a lovely mature window now.
