Pierre Gonon, Saint-Joseph, 2015
From a warm, ripe vintage, a cult Northern RhĂ´ne Syrah now hitting its stride. Pierre and Jean Gonon farm steep granite slopes in Mauves, the historic core of Saint-Joseph, facing the Hermitage hill and sharing its granitic bedrock. They farm organically (chemical-free since 2004; certified later), pick by hand and ferment with native yeasts, making Syrah celebrated for finesse and purity rather than power. The 2015 was a warm, generous year across the Northern RhĂ´ne, giving this bottling more flesh and depth than the cooler vintages, while a decade of cellaring has layered in savory, secondary complexity. Smoky, peppery and olive-tinged, it's exactly why Gonon has such a devoted following, and it's increasingly hard to come by.
