Richard Rottiers, Moulin-a-Vent Dernier Souffle, 2014
Old-vine Moulin-a-Vent with a graveyard view and a great name: Dernier Souffle means "last breath," a nod to the vineyard's spot right beside the Romaneche-Thorins cemetery. The fruit comes from 60-year-old vines, hand-harvested by organic grower Richard Rottiers, an agronomist who took over this leased estate in 2008 and farms it meticulously. This is the more mineral, linear of his Moulin-a-Vents, built on the cru's famous granite for straightness and length, and it drinks best around 6 to 7 years out. The 2014 has hit that mark, carrying gentle maturity. Beaujolais with backbone.
