Bedrock Wine Company, Evangelho Heritage Wine Red, 2020
Evangelho is one of the strangest, most singular old-vine sites in California: own-rooted vines planted in the 1890s into forty-foot-deep banks of pure beach sand along the Sacramento River Delta in Contra Costa County. The sand kept phylloxera out, so these vines never needed grafting, and it lends the wine an unmistakable polish and supple, mineral texture. Bedrock now farms the site and bottles it as a field blend of old-vine Carignan, Mourvèdre, Zinfandel, Alicante, Mission, and Palomino, fermented with native yeast and aged in a mix of French and Austrian oak (around 12% new). The result is pure, lifted, and finely tannined. Delicious now and good for a decade-plus.
