Dirty and Rowdy, Chalone MSG, 2018

MSG is Dirty and Rowdy's Chalone Rhone blend - Mourvedre, Syrah and Grenache (plus a dash of old Neenach Magic) - and it's about as small-production as serious wine gets, with only six barrels made in 2018. The fruit comes from the high-elevation Chalone AVA next to Pinnacles National Park, 1,700 to 1,900 feet up, where dramatic day-night temperature swings keep everything fresh. Founders Hardy Wallace and Matt Richardson ferment whole-cluster and bottle unfined and unfiltered, in their signature low-intervention style. Mighty, confident and bright.
