Dirty and Rowdy, Mourvedre Old Vine Enz, 2019
The Enz Vineyard is a piece of California history: dry-farmed, own-rooted Mourvedre vines planted in 1922 in the tiny Lime Kiln Valley appellation of San Benito County, with the site acquired by the Enz family in 1967. The limestone-and-granite soils and roughly 100-year-old vines give Hardy Wallace some of his most distinctive, mineral-driven fruit, and he handles it simply: whole-cluster fermentation, native yeast, neutral 600-liter barrels, then bottled unfined and unfiltered with minimal sulfur. Wallace has called past vintages of this his best work from the site. Production is tiny. Decant and serve with a slight chill.
