Jolie-Laide is the passion project of Scott Schultz, who trained at cult California cellars like Pax's Wind Gap and Arnot-Roberts before launching his own Sonoma label with partner Jenny. The thread running through everything is cool-climate sites, old-world grapes and a gentle hand: whole-cluster fruit, foot-crushing, native-yeast ferments, neutral oak and minimal sulfur, with a different artist's label each vintage to mark the ephemerality of cool-site winemaking. This North Coast Syrah blends fruit from across cooler California pockets into a more open, approachable expression than his single-vineyard bottlings, with the same gastronomic minerality. The 2018 is generous and balanced. Drink it now, ideally with food and maybe a slight chill.
