M. Chapoutier, Ermitage Blanc De l'Oree, 2011
The grand seigneur of Hermitage white. De l'Orée is one of three single-parcel "Sélection Parcellaire" whites Chapoutier makes from Hermitage hill — sourced from 60-70 year old Marsanne vines in the Les Murets lieu-dit, where ancient fluvioglacial alluvium yields wines of staggering density and longevity. 100% Marsanne, vinified half in 600-liter wooden barrels with regular bâtonnage and half in tank, raised on lees for nearly a year. The 2011 is a solid Northern Rhône vintage now fourteen years in — the wine has shed its youthful primary fruit and entered a glorious mid-life of flower oil, buttered citrus, dried pineapple, beeswax, and powdered rock. Acidity remains vibrant, texture is silken, and the finish goes on forever. Drink now or hold for decades; this is the kind of white Hermitage that ages on a Riesling-like timeline.
