Ridge, Estate Chardonnay, 2019
From the Monte Bello ridge in the Santa Cruz Mountains comes Ridge's Estate Chardonnay, the white companion to the Cabernet that famously placed in the red-wine flight at the 1976 Judgment of Paris (and went on to top the same field in the 30th-anniversary re-tasting). Paul Draper set the template; John Olney carries it forward today. The 2019 vintage delivered concentration with balance, and this wine shows it: think pale gold, citrus and green apple aromatics, salinity and crushed-stone minerality, with a creamy mid-palate from extended lees contact. Less buttery California Chardonnay, more old-vine mountain restraint. Drinking beautifully now, with another five-plus years of upside in the cellar.
