Schone Tal Cellars, Yamhill County Arlo, 2017
Schone Tal is a tiny family winery in McMinnville, Oregon (the name is German for beautiful valley) making small-lot, minimal-intervention Pinot Noir. Arlo, named for the owners' grandson, is the standout: 100% Pommard clone from Block K, the highest part of the Hirschy Vineyard in the Yamhill-Carlton AVA, fermented with heavy whole-cluster inclusion and aged 17 months in neutral French oak. Only a couple dozen cases are made. The 2017 is a structured, savory expression of one of the Willamette Valley's great sites.
