Alain Voge, Cornas Vieilles Vignes, 2015

Cornas tradition from one of the appellation's most historic addresses, now entering its drinking window. Domaine Alain Voge has been a touchstone for classical Cornas for decades — Alain himself passed in 2020, with Lionel Fraisse leading the estate today (Albéric Mazoyer ran the cellar from 2004 to October 2018, then handed over to Fraisse); ownership of the land remains with the Voge family, while the commercial company is shared between the Voge family, Michel Chapoutier and Lionel Fraisse. The house style is old-school Cornas: long maceration, restrained extraction, elevage in large neutral foudre. The Vieilles Vignes cuvee draws from Voge's older Cornas parcels — vines averaging around 60 years old, with the Vieilles Vignes cuvée drawing from older parcels (the eighty-year-old vines are reserved for the separate Les Vieilles Fontaines cuvée); the broader estate's vines range roughly 20-70 years old. 2015 was a major Northern Rhone vintage: concentrated, structured, built to age. Ten years on, the wine is just stepping into its window with another fifteen-plus years of upside. Blackberry, smoked olive, violet, peppercorn, bacon fat, warm granite. Decant generously.
