Chateau Croix de Labrie, Saint-Emilion, 2006
A small Saint-Émilion estate from one of Bordeaux's last true 'garagiste' moments. Croix de Labrie sits on the Right Bank with under six hectares of vines, Merlot-led with a touch of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. The 2006 was made under the Puzio-Lesage family, when the estate was effectively the poster child for the garage-wine movement — production small enough to age in a living room, focus relentless. 2006 was a more classical, structured Bordeaux vintage following the celebrated 2005, with cooler nights preserving acidity and giving the wines a more savory edge. Nineteen years on, the wine has shed its first plump fruit and entered a graceful mature window where the secondary aromas of cedar, tobacco, and earth come forward.
