Domenico Clerico, Barolo Pajana, 2006
Domenico Clerico was one of the original Barolo Boys, the 1990s modernist crew who put French barrique and shorter macerations into the Langhe playbook. Pajana is one of his flagships, a single-vineyard Barolo from inside the Ginestra MGA in Monforte d'Alba, planted in 1971 on Lequio-Serravallian marl, debut vintage 1990. The 2006 sits squarely in the modernist Clerico mold, vinified by Domenico himself nearly two decades ago: French barrique, polished tannin, exotic spice. Domenico passed in 2017, and the estate continues under Oscar Arrivabene, Domenico's longtime protégé and right-hand man and the team he trained, with a recent move toward larger oak and longer macerations. This 2006 is a snapshot of the original style at peak maturity, drinking beautifully right now.
